Harnessing the Wind

How do wind turbines convert wind into electricity?
The sun’s radiation heats different parts of the earth at different rates-most notably during the day and night, but also when different surfaces (for example, water and land) absorb or reflect at different rates. Hot air rises, reducing the atmospheric pressure at the earth’s surface, and cooler air is drawn in to replace it. The result is wind. Air has mass, and when it is in motion, it contains the energy of that motion (“kinetic energy”).

A wind energy system transforms the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical or electrical energy for practical use.

Why should I use the wind as my power source?
Harnessing the wind is often the best choice among renewable resources because:

  • Like the sun, wind is completely free, inexhaustible and renewable
  • Power generation is not reliant upon time of day or time of year
  • Wind generates more power at a lower cost than all other forms of alternative energy except hydropower plants
  • A wind turbine requires a smaller footprint (less surface area)

What do I need to have wind power work for me?
You’ll need wind, adequate ground space and zoning laws that allow a structure at least 80’ to 120’ tall.

How much wind is required?
The Viryd Wind Turbine will generate usable power from as little wind as 10 mph up to as much as 50 mph.

What other special equipment do I need to use the electricity from the turbine?
None. Your wind turbine will provide electricity just like your utility company provides you electricity.

Will a wind turbine affect my appliances or existing home electronics in any way?
No.

Will the wind turbine make noise?
The Viryd wind turbine will make about as much noise as an average washing machine. Of course, the noise will be 80’ to 120’ feet in the air.

How tall are wind turbines?
Generally, the wind tower is 80’ to 120’ tall. In some cases, they can be taller.

What does it cost, what will I save and how long will it all take to amortize?
When you’re ready, we’ll help you determine all your costs and all your savings as the first step in our process. Here’s some more information about costs and savings (Link)

What rebates and incentives are available to me?
Currently, there is a 30% federal tax credit. Many states have additional rebates and incentives. These rebates and incentives can reduce the cost of your system by nearly 40% to 60%.

Are there any permits I need to worry about?
We’ll help you identify and apply for all the required permits, such as zoning and agreements, and those required by your utility company.

What happens if I am using more electricity than my wind turbine generates?
If you already get electricity from a utility company, then you can (and should) remain tied to the utility grid. This means that any electricity you need that is not generated from your wind turbine will come from your utility provider.

What happens if my wind turbine generates more electricity than I use?
If your wind turbine generates more electricity than you are using most utilities have a net metering policy that will generate credits for you.

Is there a warranty on Viryd Wind Turbines?
Yes, a 5 year manufacturer’s warranty.

How reliable are Viryd wind turbines?
Viryd wind turbines are smaller versions of the turbines in wind farms all over the country. They are very reliable and require yearly maintenance to operate at peak efficiency. They operate automatically and are designed to work smoothly for over 20 years.

How do Viryd Wind Turbines produce more usable power at less cost with greater reliability?
Viryd Wind Turbines consistently produce a 33% lower cost-per-kilowatt-hour and have a 25% to 39% higher Annual Energy Production (AEP) than any other comparable turbines. The savings in energy cost, as well as the Federal and State incentives and grants result in a (7) seven year payback potential.

Our proprietary rotor, drive train and tower technology and design gives us:

  • A greater operating range, including the ability to generate power at higher and lower wind speeds
  • A constant speed to the generator, resulting in grid compatible power direct from the turbine
  • Lower dependence on complex electronics, which improves our serviceability and reliability
  • Power that can be used in any way possible – On grid / off grid hybrid versatility
  • Shorter installation, from an estimated 30 days to 2 days, by eliminating the need for a large concrete pad and use of a crane.
